How Effective is Extrapleural Pneumonectomy After Chemotherapy in Treating Mesothelioma?

Researchers at the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Clinic and Policlinic for Radiation Oncology, and Clinic and Policlinic for Oncology, University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, conducted a pilot study on the efficacy of chemotherapy with the drugs cisplatin and gemcitabine followed by extrapleural pneumonectomy (the removal of a diseased lung and, if necessary, the diaphragm and linings of the heart and lungs) with or without radiation therapy in patients with surgically removable malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).
