Effects Of Chronic Insomnia
Effects Of Chronic Insomnia
Exactly how much sleep does each person need will vary, depending on each
person. The average when it comes to sleep length is considered to be 7 ½ hours,
but plenty of people will sleep much less and still function properly, while
others will sleep at least 10 to be able to do their job. Sleeplessness is
something that most people will go through at some point. You know what I’m
talking about. You probably experienced your own nights where you turned and
tossed around, not being able to fall asleep. It’s a common experience among
humans and in many cases, it is caused by indigestion, stress, too much caffeine
or alcohol.

What I talked about so far was a basic case of insomnia. The real problem is
when you have chronic insomnia. This type of insomnia appears when you have
longer periods of time without sleep, usually three or four nights during each
week, for periods which can go over one month.
Chronic insomnia effects
Usually, when the diagnosis of chronic insomnia is set, the reason behind the
problem isn’t immediately evident. The problem is that the lack of sleep will
lead to a powerful decrease of the level of energy of the body, together with
the appearance of mood swings. The person that is affected by chronic insomnia
will be irritable and high strung as a result. Unfortunately, this type of
situation will usually lead to a worse home environment and to marital discord,
which will also make the insomnia worse in time.
Decreased energy levels and mood swings aren’t the only bad effects that the
lack of sleep has on someone. The research done so far says that the immune
system is reinforced during sleep periods, so your health might be affected if
you don’t sleep properly. As a result, you might get sick, as your body can’t
fight off viral attacks and bacteria.
When the lack of sleep appears thanks to insomnia, you will usually be less
alert and focused, you will be more tired, and that can cause accidents, at your
workplace, on the road and at your house.
Another problem with chronic insomnia is that it can cause decreased
performances at work, and some people have lost their jobs because lack of
sleep. With the financial problems that something like this would bring, your
sleep problems would get even worse.
Chronic sleep deprivation causes
There are many possible
causes for chronic insomnia, including psychological reasons, chronic stress,
anxiety, depression, paranoia, allergies, arthritis, asthma or respiratory
problems.
In most cases, the causes are of a psychological or psychiatric nature, and
not physical. There are some disorders that are known to produce insomnia,
including chronic depression, schizophrenia, manic depression, chronic anxiety
and others. According to studies, over two thirds of all people that have
psychological disorders will also have insomnia. The problem is the melatonin
levels, which are low, and the stress hormones, which are high. Melatonin is a
hormone which helps to induce sleep.
In some cases, no medical explanation can be found for a case of chronic
insomnia. In this case, the name for it is primary insomnia. This type of
insomnia might be caused by behavioral elements or by the lifestyle. The abuse
of nicotine, alcohol, caffeine or drugs is one of the possible elements that can
cause primary insomnia.
