Mesothelioma - Types You Didn't Know Existed Until Today!

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that afflicts persons exposed to asbestos, who contact the same either by inhalation or swallowing of the asbestos fibers. Human body's natural immune system is incapable of breaking down these fibers. Not only that; these fibers compromise the immune system.

Different types of malignant Mesothelioma have been identified, namely

Pleural Mesothelioma, The serous membranes called plurae, covering, protecting and cushioning the lungs, help in the proper functioning of lungs. They become malignant with the deposits of asbestos fibers.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma, The peritoneum, a serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity, secreting a fluid providing movement and cutting down friction to the two types, the visceral and the parietal peritoneum are afflicted with asbestos fibers.
Pericardial Mesothelioma, in which the protective layers of the heart are affected.
Reproductive Mesothelioma, in which the testis are affected.
Epithelioid Mesothelioma, in which the skin is affected.
Bi-Phasic Mesothelioma describes a condition in which Mesothelioma is comprised of both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cancer cells.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is the most serious of the three subtypes because it does respond nearly as well to treatment as do the other two histological types, epithelioid Mesothelioma and Bi-Phasic Mesothelioma.

Before taking up any treatment plan, it is essential that the patient undergoes a workup and complete range of tests so that the doctor can identify the extent of cancer involved.
